Description
Aristolochia tomentosa, or Woolly Dutchman’s Pipe, is a fast-growing, deciduous climbing vine known for its dense foliage and unusual flowers. Its large, velvety, heart-shaped leaves create a lush, tropical appearance, making it an ideal choice for providing shade, screening, or adding vertical interest to the landscape. The vine can quickly reach heights of 15-30 feet (4.5-9 meters), making it perfect for trellises, arbors, pergolas, and fences.
In late spring to early summer, Aristolochia tomentosa produces distinctive, pipe-shaped yellow-green flowers, which resemble an old-fashioned smoking pipe. These unique blooms emit a mild scent that attracts flies and other pollinators. Additionally, this plant serves as an important larval host for the Pipevine Swallowtail butterfly, making it a valuable addition to pollinator and wildlife gardens.
