Description
Arundo donax, or Giant Reed, is an imposing, clump-forming grass known for its towering, cane-like stems and striking foliage. Native to Mediterranean and warm temperate regions, this vigorous perennial produces tall, hollow stems reminiscent of bamboo, with broad, arching green leaves that provide excellent screening and architectural interest. During late summer to early fall, large, feathery flower plumes appear, adding a dramatic, ornamental effect.
This resilient grass thrives in full sun and tolerates a wide range of soil conditions, from moist riverbanks to dry, sandy soils. Although it prefers wet areas, it is remarkably drought-tolerant once established. Arundo donax is widely used for erosion control, windbreaks, and habitat restoration due to its ability to stabilize soil and withstand harsh environmental conditions.
