Description
Asarum caudatum, or Wild Ginger, is a hardy, shade-loving perennial native to the forests of western North America. This low-growing plant forms a dense mat of trailing, heart-shaped, glossy green leaves that provide year-round interest and serve as an excellent ground cover for woodland gardens. Unlike traditional ginger, Asarum caudatum is primarily grown for its ornamental and ecological benefits rather than its culinary use.
In spring to early summer, this species produces intriguing, maroon-purple flowers with long, pointed “tails” that emerge at ground level beneath the foliage. While often hidden from view, these unusual flowers attract pollinators such as beetles and ants. The plant spreads slowly via rhizomes, creating an effective weed-suppressing carpet in shaded landscapes.
