Description
Asarum europaeum, or European Wild Ginger, is a hardy and highly ornamental ground cover, valued for its deep green, leathery, heart-shaped leaves that remain attractive year-round. This creeping perennial forms a dense mat, making it an excellent choice for suppressing weeds and filling shaded areas with rich foliage.
In early spring, small, dark maroon, cup-shaped flowers emerge at ground level, often hidden beneath the leaves. Though inconspicuous, these flowers attract ground-dwelling pollinators, adding to the plant’s ecological value. Asarum europaeum thrives in moist, humus-rich, well-draining soil and prefers full to partial shade. Once established, it is remarkably low-maintenance and tolerates drought conditions better than other wild ginger species.
