Description

Schefflera alpina is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to montane regions of Southeast Asia, where it grows in cool, humid forest environments. Belonging to the Araliaceae family, it is valued for its bold foliage and refined, architectural form.

The plant is characterised by its large, palmately compound leaves, typically made up of 5–7 elongated, leathery leaflets radiating from a central point. These glossy, deep green leaves create a lush, umbrella-like canopy that gives the plant a distinctly tropical appearance.

In late summer to autumn, Schefflera alpina produces rounded clusters of small, creamy-white flowers arranged in dense umbels. These are often followed by dark purple to black fruits, adding seasonal interest and attracting wildlife.

Adapted to cooler high-altitude conditions compared to many tropical relatives, it performs well in sheltered gardens with partial shade, moist but well-drained soil, and protection from harsh winds. Its combination of hardiness and exotic foliage makes it a desirable choice for temperate, jungle-style planting schemes.
