Description

Agave americana is a dramatic, large succulent often called Century Plant, American Aloe, or Maguey. Native to Mexico and the southern United States, it’s one of the most recognizable agaves thanks to its bold, architectural form.

🌱 Key Characteristics:

  • Growth Habit: Forms a striking rosette of thick, fleshy leaves that can span 4–8 ft (1.2–2.4 m) tall and up to 6–10 ft (1.8–3 m) wide.

  • Foliage: Leaves are blue-green to grey-green, stiff, and sword-like with sharp terminal spines and toothed edges. Some varieties (like Agave americana ‘Variegata’) have cream or yellow margins.

  • Flowering: Monocarpic—plants flower once in their lifetime, typically after 10–30 years (not a true century). A towering flower spike (15–30 ft / 4.5–9 m tall) emerges, bearing clusters of yellow-green flowers. After flowering, the parent rosette dies, but often produces offshoots (“pups”) around its base.

  • Lifespan: The main rosette lives many years but dies after blooming; offsets extend its presence.

  • Hardiness: Grows best in USDA Zones 8–11; tolerates heat and drought exceptionally well.

🌞 Growing Conditions:

  • Light: Requires full sun for best form and colour.

  • Soil: Prefers sandy, well-drained soil; highly drought-tolerant once established.

  • Watering: Very low water needs; overwatering can cause root rot.

  • Maintenance: Minimal—remove spent leaves and manage offsets if desired.

🌿 Landscape & Uses:

  • Excellent as a specimen plant in xeriscaping, Mediterranean-style gardens, or desert landscapes.

  • Works well in large containers (with careful placement due to sharp spines).

  • Provides strong architectural interest and pairs beautifully with rocks, gravel, and other succulents like aloes and cacti.

  • Traditionally, Agave americana has been used for fibre, food, and fermented beverages in Mexico (though not the main source of tequila, which comes from Agave tequilana).

⚠️ Caution: The sap can be irritating to skin, and the sharp leaf tips can be hazardous—best planted away from paths or play areas.
