Description

Botanical Name: Colocasia esculenta ‘Tropical Storm’
Common Names: Elephant Ear ‘Tropical Storm’, Taro
Family: Araceae (arum family)
Type: Tropical perennial, grown as an annual in colder climates

🌴 Key Features:

  • Foliage:
The standout feature of ‘Tropical Storm’ is its deep purple to black leaves with prominent creamy white veins radiating outward like lightning—hence the “storm” in its name. The leaves are heart- or shield-shaped, large, and often glossy, providing a dramatic contrast in garden beds or containers.

  • Stems:
Rich burgundy to blackish-purple stems support the foliage, adding even more visual interest.

  • Size:
Typically grows 2 to 3 feet tall and wide, more compact than other Colocasia varieties, making it great for containers or smaller landscapes.

  • Growth Habit:
Clumping, upright form. Though not as aggressively spreading as some other elephant ears, it can still slowly form small colonies in warm zones.

☀️ Growing Conditions:

  • Light:
Prefers partial shade to full sun (more sun = deeper color, but partial shade can prevent leaf scorch).

  • Water:
Likes consistently moist to wet soil — can even tolerate boggy or shallow pond conditions. Not drought-tolerant.

  • Soil:
Rich, organic, and well-draining but moisture-retentive.

  • Hardiness:
USDA Zones 7b–11. In colder zones, it’s treated as an annual or overwintered indoors.

🌱 Uses in the Garden:

  • Great for tropical or jungle-style gardens

  • Stunning as a container centerpiece

  • Excellent in rain gardens, near water features, or ponds

  • Combines well with chartreuse, silver, or pink-toned foliage plants

⚠️ Other Notes:

  • While Colocasia esculenta (taro) is edible when cooked, ornamental varieties like ‘Tropical Storm’ are not recommended for consumption.

  • Like other aroids, the plant may contain calcium oxalate crystals, which are toxic if ingested raw and can irritate skin.
