Description
Common Name: Japanese Forest Grass ‘All Gold’
Type: Deciduous perennial grass
Height & Spread: 12–18 inches tall, spreading to 18–24 inches wide
Hardiness Zones: USDA 5–9
Description:
‘All Gold’ is a luminous cultivar of the Japanese Forest Grass, notable for its cascading mounds of bright golden-yellow foliage. The narrow, arching leaves shimmer in sunlight, bringing a vivid pop of color to shaded or partially shaded garden areas. Unlike the variegated form (‘Aureola’), ‘All Gold’ offers a more consistent, saturated yellow hue that can intensify in brighter light. The plant forms a graceful, fountain-like shape that moves gently with the breeze, adding texture and motion to the landscape.
Light Requirements:
Prefers partial shade to full shade; can tolerate some morning sun. Too much direct sunlight may cause leaf scorch.
Soil:
Moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil is ideal. It thrives in woodland gardens or along shaded borders.
Maintenance:
Low maintenance. Cut back old foliage in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. Slow to establish but long-lived once settled.
Landscape Uses:
Perfect for edging pathways, underplanting trees, in shade gardens, containers, or as a soft groundcover in mixed perennial borders. Its bright color contrasts beautifully with darker-leaved plants like hostas or ferns.
