Description
Miscanthus sinensis ‘Gracillimus’is an elegant, ornamental grass prized for its fine texture and graceful, arching form. Habit & Size: Forms a large, upright, vase-shaped clump that typically reaches 4–7 feet (1.2–2.1 m) tall and about 3–5 feet (0.9–1.5 m) wide. Its narrow, arching leaves give it a soft, fountain-like appearance.
-
Foliage: The leaves are slender, dark green, and finely textured, with a prominent silver midrib. In autumn, the foliage often takes on warm copper, orange, or golden tones, adding seasonal interest.
-
Flowers: In late summer to early fall, ‘Gracillimus’ may produce copper-red flower plumes that mature to silvery-beige, providing height and movement in the garden. In cooler regions, flowers may be sparse or appear late.
-
Seasonal Interest: Highly valued for its year-round appeal—lush and graceful in summer, warm-toned in autumn, and providing attractive texture and movement in the winter garden when left standing.
-
Uses: Excellent as a specimen plant, in mixed borders, or for screening. Its fine texture contrasts beautifully with bold-leaved perennials and shrubs.
-
Growing Conditions: Prefers full sun and moderately fertile, well-drained soil. It is tolerant of heat, humidity, and drought once established. Hardy in USDA zones 5–9.
-
Maintenance: Low-maintenance; cut back old foliage to the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges.
It’s considered one of the classic ornamental grasses, especially popular in traditional and naturalistic garden designs.
