Description
Sempervivum is a genus of succulent plants commonly known as “Hens and Chicks”. These hardy perennials are native to mountainous regions of Europe and are known for their rosette-shaped growth and ability to thrive in poor, rocky soil. Sempervivum are low-maintenance, drought-tolerant, and can survive in harsh conditions, making them popular in rock gardens, alpine gardens, and container arrangements.
Key Features:
-
Rosette Shape: Leaves form a tight, circular rosette.
-
Leaf Texture: Thick, fleshy, often covered with fine hairs or a waxy coating.
-
Color: Varies from green to red, purple, or bronze depending on species and sun exposure.
-
Propagation: Produces offsets (“chicks”) around the parent rosette (“hen”), which can be separated and replanted.
-
Flowers: Small, star-shaped blooms appear in summer on tall stalks and usually die after flowering (monocarpic).
Sempervivum are extremely resilient and ideal for both indoor and outdoor cultivation, as long as they have good drainage and sunlight.
