Description

Description & Overview

Botanical Name: Garrya × thurettii
Parentage: A hybrid of Garrya elliptica and Garrya fadyenii, originally cultivated by Gustave Thuret around 1862 in Antibes, France.

Appearance

  • Foliage: Evergreen with dense, glossy, narrow-oblong leaves typically up to 10 cm long. Leaves are lustrous on the upper side and may be slightly downy beneath in young growth.

  • Catkins: In spring, the plant produces attractive pendent catkins up to around 8 cm in length.

  • Habit: A robust, vigorous evergreen shrub with a rounded, bushy form that can eventually reach both 4–8 m in height and spread over 10–20 years.

Growing Conditions

  • Position & Soil: Thrives in full sun to partial shade, preferring well-drained soil (chalk, loam, clay, sand) with adaptable pH levels (acidic, neutral, alkaline).

  • Hardiness: Rated as hardy (H4), tolerating temperatures down to approximately –10 °C, making it resilient in many UK gardens.

  • Landscape Uses: Well-suited for hedging, screens, or as a standout specimen shrub. Performs particularly well in coastal areas or sheltered wall-side locations.

Maintenance

  • Pruning: Minimal maintenance is needed. Prune only to remove dead or damaged growth or shape lightly after flowering. Hard pruning can reduce catkin production for a few seasons afterward.

  • Pests & Disease: Generally pest-resistant, though occasionally susceptible to leaf spot or fungal issues such as honey fungus.
